An impressive sofa table attributed to George Smith
This large scale table was retailed by Norman Adams Ltd, 8-10 Hans Road, London, probably in the 1960's and is of very high quality. The end support base, with sabre legs inlaid with ebony stringing and original brass castors and turned stretcher held in place at either end by roundels. The table has 2 large oak lined drawers, one with the retailers label. The beautifully figured top has very large re-entrant corners and is a wonderful colour. Possibly the most significant and dramatic feature of this piece is its size being 1800mm wide when open, 925mm deep, 740mm high and 1220mm wide when closed. Circa 1820.
George Smith was born in 1786 and became one of the Regency’s most celebrated antique furniture designers. Like his contemporaries, the architect Henry Holland and cabinet-maker Thomas Hope, he was championed by an aristocracy demanding the fashionable and beautifully executed.
Smith’s eclectic style ranged from the neo-classic to Gothic, Chinese to Etruscan and was illustrated and popularised in his pattern books including ‘A Collection of Designs for Household Furniture and Interior Decoration.’ Smith was the Prince Regent’s ‘upholsterer extraordinary’ and contributed much to the Chinoiserie delights of the Brighton Pavilion. W J Gravener Antiques is a family owned business, started in 1963 by William who was joined by son, Mark in 1981 and continues today with the same ethos of dealing in fine quality English and Continental furniture, mirrors and decorative objects, from the 18th & 19th centuries. Now under the stewardship of Mark and his wife, Louise, we take pride in maintaining the high standards which William set more than 50 years ago.
