An Imposing 19thc. Dresden Globular Vase
A Very Large Late 19thc. (c1880) Dresden Yellow Globular Vase Handpainted With Watteauesque Scenes. Augustus Red Helena Wolfsohn Mark
An imposing Dresden vase of the highest quality, beautifully hand painted with Watteauesque scenes of lovers consorting in a classical landscape. Wonderful yellow ground, making the vase highly suitable for display in modern light and bright rooms, but equally impressive in a more traditional house.
Underglaze blue Augustus Rex mark, oval bulbous body and gilt knob on the lid with fine polychrome on-glaze painting and rich gold decoration.
Contrary to popular belief, Helena Wolfsohn did not copy other company's marks. Rather, it was Helena Wolfsohn's daughter, Emilie, who took over the business from her mother in 1878. She found herself in trouble in 1879, however, when she started copying the Meissen Augustus Rex mark. From that point, various similar marks were utilised to confuse the German courts, but in 1881 the German courts ruled that the offending marks and all variants thereof could no longer be used. The English courts effectively endorsed that decision in 1883.
