An English Bellarmine made by Guy Sydenham, for much of his career head of making at Poole Pottery. He did a 7 year apprenticeship at Poole and progressed. He lived on a large boat in Poole harbour moored on Long Island, later gaining a lease on the island. He had discovered a good source of clay and built himself a studio and kiln there. In the 1960s he was commissioned by an American client to create copies of a large number of real Bellarmines for his collection so for realism unmarked in his usual manner. Some escaped onto the market as this one which is a dated copy of a 1578 Bellarmine.
