An Early 19thc (c1820) John Yates plate c.1830
Description.
A beautifully hand painted and gilded plate, in Pattern 846, almost certainly by John Yates, dating from around 1830-5. One can be reasonably definitive as to the Yates attribution for a variety of reasons. Stylistically, this plate bears a very close resemblance to other items attributed to Yates. See the attached photograph from the website of JockandJen Antiques, which beats a startling resemblance to this piece. Furthermore, most of the other manufacturers can be eliminated either because:
Their pattern 846 is known and is not this pattern (Grainger/Chamberlain)
They did not make a pattern 846 (Mason/Ridgway)
Their pattern 846 would have been too early or too late (New Hall/John Rose/Spode)
Their pattern numbers commenced with a number higher than 846 (Alcock/Daniel)
They did not use pattern numbers (Flight Barr/Derby (after 1820) )
They used a fractional system (Charles Bourne/Sir James Duke)
They had ceased operating (Nantgarw/Swansea/Herculaneum/Pinxton)
Their plate shapes do not match (Rockingham)
Note that we are selling another plate in this pattern
