Allan Ramsay Dtd.1888 Oil/Canvas Scottish Burn
We are pleased to offer this stunning landscape oil on canvas by the Scottish artist ALLAN RAMSAY, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner and dated it 88, for 1888. He has also inscribed the canvas verso with the following 'Rocks at Bridge of Mooran Oct.1888 Allan Ramsay Edzell'.
Edzell is a village near Brechin and the Mooran is a burn to the west of the village. There is a stone bridge over the burn, which can be seen in the centre right of the painting. There are some old photographs of the bridge available on google.
The painting has been executed in autumnal tones and shows the rocks on a sunny day in October, with the burn tumbling through rocky outcrops, with a small track winding its way through the trees to cross the bridge to the right. The detail of the rocks is superb.
ALLAN RAMSAY, 1852-1912 (although according to Christie's it is 1920), was a Victorian Scottish painter of landscapes in oils, who was based in Perthshire. According to the Dictionary of Scottish Painters by Harris & Halsby, he also painted some portraits, although we cannot verify this. Other than this, The Dictionary of British Artists lists him as a portrait painter, with an address in Dundee. He exhibited 9 paintings at the Royal Scottish Academy between 1880 and 1887.
Auction prices achieved for his paintings can be found at artprice.com (48 listings), artnet.com (31), findartinfo.com (19) and arcadja.com (18). His work has also appeared in Hislop's Guide to the UK art Market, where the average price for the three oils sold in 2006 was £850.
The painting is framed in a 3 1/2" gilt frame and slip and is ready to hang.
