Alfred Mitchell 1861-1948 Watercolour Mullion Cove
We are very pleased to offer this large and very well executed watercolour by the artist Alfred Mitchell, who has signed the painting A. Mitchell in the lower left hand corner. The painting depicts a view of, we believe, the smaller beach at Mullion Cove, in Cornwall, near to where the artist lived. There are many images of this cove on google.
If you imagine viewing this from the sea, you can see the large rock formation to the right of the beach. There are many sea birds flying and perched on the rock ledges.
Alfred Mitchell was born in Colyton, Devon in 1861. He was the son of the Superintendant of Devon Constabulary and his sister became an art teacher. In 1881, the family were living at Rose Villa, Bannerwell St. Tavistock and by 1891, at Hillside, Tavistock. In 1901, Alfred was visiting Orielton Hall, in Barmouth, North Wales, but by 1911, he was living alone at Meres Cliff, Mullion, Cornwall, where he had a Studio. He was making a living as a landscape painter. As we have no access to census records after 1911, we have no further information about his lie, except to say that he died in the district of Tavistock in Devon in 1948.
He exhibited 4 paintings at the Royal Academy between 1894 (Plymouth address), 1897 (Cornwall address), and 1904 (Yelverton Devon address).
He is listed in The Dictionary of British Artist (Collectors' Club) and The Dictionary of Victorian Painters by Christopher Wood.
The painting is mounted with washlines and is framed in a 5/8" gilt frame. It will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
Image size 27 1/4" x 17" - 69.2cm x 43.15cm
Frame size 34" x 24 1/2" - 86.25cm x 62.2cm
Medium Watercolours
Condition Excellent condition with no foxing or fading. The mount and frame are in good condition.
