Alfred E. Chalon RA 1780-1860 Watercolour Portrait Alfred Edward Chalon RA 1780-1860 Early Victorian %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
We are offering for sale this detailed and wonderfully executed watercolour portrait of an unknown, but obviously aristocratic Continental lady by the artist ALFRED EDWARD CHALON R.A., who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner and dated it 1830. The portrait depicts the lady sitting on a cushioned bench, in a garden setting, playing a guitar. Her dark hair is piled high on the top of her head with ringlets, and side curls and she is wearing an elaborate headdress with a long lace-edged veil. Her dress is low-cut with elaborate sleeves and a double fringed skirt. She is possibly Spanish or Italian.

Alfred Edward Chalon was born in Geneva in 1780, the son of a watchmaker, who settled in Kensingon, London. He was a painter of portraits, miniatures and contemporary and historical genre. He was the brother of John James Chalon, (1778-1854, and the brothers, both unmarried, lived in Kensington for the rest of their lives. Alfred entered the Royal Academy schools in 1797. He became a member of the Associated Artists in 1807, resigning the following year to found the Sketching Society with his brother. He was the first painter to paint Queen Victoria on her accession to the throne, this portrait being reproduced on many issues of Colonial stamps, and received the appointment of Portrait Painter to the Queen. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1801 and was elected an associate of the Academy in 1812 and a full Academician in 1816. He died in 1860 at the age of 80 and is buried in Highgate cemetery in the same grave as his brother, who pre-deceased him.
