Alfred C. Weatherstone 1863-45 Watercolour Cosette
We are pleased to offer for sale this lovely little gem of a watercolour by Alfred C. Weatherstone, who has signed the painting in the lower left hand corner and entitled it verso 'Cosette'. The painting depicts a young woman, dressed in a white blouse and dark blue bodice and a turquoise overskirt, standing beside a stone well, holding a large, two handled vessel on a chain. There are three fan-tailed doves around her.
In virtually all the exterior watercolours painted by this artist, there are doves or pigeons and in the only interior that we have seen, there are two tortoises.
Alfred C. Weatherstone 1863-1945, was born in St. Pancras London. By 1901, he was living in Croydon and by 1911 he resided in Islington, where he died in 1945. He is listed as being a stained glass designer and painter, primarily in watercolours, in a style partially influenced by Sir Lawrence Alma Tadema. He flourished from 1888-1929.
He exhibited 11 paintings at The Royal Academy, 6 at The Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, 4 at Manchester City Art Gallery, 2 at The Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours, and 2 at the Dudley Gallery.
He is listed in The Dictionary of British Artists (Collectors' Club) and The Dictionary of Victorian Painters by Christopher Wood.
Auction results for this artist may be found at the usual sites and the highest price achieved for one of his watercolours is £5,500.
The painting has been newly double mounted in two tone acid free mountboard and newly framed in a 1 1/4" gilt frame to suit. It is ready to hang.
