Albert Williams 1922-2010 Oil Hellebores/Holly
We are delighted to offer for sale this lovely Christmassy oil on board still life painting by the celebrated flower painter Albert Williams, who has signed the painting in the lower left hand corner. The painting depicts a pale blue and white Chinese vase containing a bunch of Hellebores and Holly with berries, with some Mistletoe leaves. This combination of flowers leaves and berries was a favourite subject of the artist in the winter months.
Albert Williams was born on 20th March, 1922 in the Brighton area and was taught by his father and grandfather, who were both artists. He studied at Brighton School of Art and later in London and Paris. He initially worked for Sandersons the wallpaper company in their London studio, but, after World War Two, he returned to Hove, where he remained for the rest of his life, working as a professional artist.
Interestingly, he lived at the former home of another floral artist, Charles H. H. Burleigh, at 7 Wilbury Crescent, Hove, one of whose paintings we have also sold.
He initially painted flowers in the botanical fashion of the Dutch Masters, but later developed a his own more free style. He painted only from nature and, if the flowers in his paintings went out of season before he had finished painting them, he put the work aside and finished it later, when the flowers featured were again in season. He painted every day from spring to autumn when flowers were plentiful and used to go down to his garden, where there were many varieties of rose bushes in particular, pick them and retire upstairs to his large studio and paint them.
His paintings attained huge popularity after the war, as people were looking for paintings that were bright and cheerful to brighten their homes, after the drabness of the war years. Prints of his paintings were given away in copies of the Women's Pictorial and he received fan mail from women all over the country.
He exhibited widely in London and the provinces, at The Royal Academy, Royal Society of Painters in Watercolours, Royal Oil Painters Institute, Royal Society of British Artists and at The Paris Salon in 1955. His work was also exhibited at the Fine Art Society, Frost & Reed and other galleries.
He sadly died in 2010. There is a great deal of information about him on google and examples of his many paintings can be found there and also on artnet. Auction results achieved can be found on findartinfo and artprice.
The painting is framed in a 2 5/8" cream and silver frame, which suits it very well. It will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
Image size 17 3/8" x 13 3/8" - 44.1cm x 33.9cm
Frame size 22 7/8" x 18 1/2" - 58cm x 47cm
