Albert Goodwin RWS 1845-1932 Landscape Watercolour
We are pleased to offer for sale this quite large moorland landscape by the revered artist Albert Goodwin, who has signed the painting in red in the lower right hand corner with his distinctive AG monogram and dated it 29, for 1929. The watercolour depicts a vibrant sunset landscape, with a narrow stretch of water, partially hidden within its banks, running horizontally across the moors.
Albert Goodwin RWS (1845–1932) was a British landscapist specialising in watercolours. His work shows the influences of Turner and the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood.
Goodwin was born in Maidstone in Kent on 17th January, 1845 the son of a builder Samuel Goodwin & his wife Rosetta, and one of 9 children. After leaving school he became an apprentice draper. His exceptional artistic ability was recognised at an early age and he went on to study with the Pre-Raphaelite artists Arthur Hughes, who lived in Maidstone for a while, and Ford Madox Brown - the latter predicting that he would become "one of the greatest landscape painters of the age".
At the age of 15 his first painting was exhibited at the Royal Academy. He became an associate member of the Royal Watercolour Society (RWS) in 1876. He was championed by famed art critic John Ruskin who took him on a tour of Europe, from Switzerland to Italy, where he made many sketches from nature which were later turned into watercolours. During his lifetime he traveled extensively throughout Britain and Europe, and visited many other countries including Egypt, India, the West Indies, USA, New Zealand and a trip to Canada in 1890 accompanied by his nephew and fellow artist Sidney Goodwin.
Goodwin was a prolific artist, producing over 800 works and continuing to paint well into his eighties. His wide variety of landscape subjects reflected his love of travel and show the influence of Turner, with whom he felt a strong affinity. In later works he developed experimental techniques such as using ink over water color to achieve atmospheric lighting effects. His works are also an important record of social history.
He had numerous solo exhibitions, and examples of his work may be found in The British Museum, The Tate Gallery, Victoria & Albert Museum, Fitzwilliam Museum Cambridge, Maidstone Museum & AG, Manchester AG, Whitworth AG (Manchester). There are 57 of his works in the National Collection, which can be viewed at ArtUK.org.
He died on 10th April, 1932, survived by 5 daughters and 2 sons.
The painting has been newly double mounted in two-tone acid-free mountboard and newly framed in a 1 3/8" dull gilt wooden frameto complement. It will be supplied with new brass hangers, new brass picture wire and will be ready to hang.
