Alan Caiger-Smith HUGE Studio Pottery Storage Jar
Sorry this item is now SOLD.
This monumental pot is one of the largest pieces by Alan Caiger-Smith that I've offered for sale.
A very confident piece, expertly thrown from red earthenware and beautifully decorated.
The generous body features lug handles and a very wide, flared rim. The lid is brilliantly crafted and is completed with a superb, strap handle, highly tactile what with its raised central ridge.
This pot has been brush painted with a lovely, muted earth palette and in a most spontaneous manner - calligraphic yet organic.
Lidded vessels by Alan Caiger-Smith, especially ones on this grand scale and in this condition, can be considered rare.
The base is fully signed with a large monogram and the with the date mark 'VI' for 1966.
A superb and important addition to an existing collection of Alan Caiger-Smith's work, or, a stunning item to display singularly and in it's own right.
A pot of great presence and merit.
Dimensions (approx, cms):
33 dia (at lug handles)
30 dia (at upper rim)
32 cms high (including lid)
