The bowl of this is hand carved out of a complete burr from the side of a birch tree incorporating part of the running timber for the handle. The whole is in one piece and because there was full use of the burr the uneven outer bark intrudes through the thickness of the bowl to the inside. Thus it was never for scooping liquids, grains or beans perhaps. It is a fascinating piece with age and seasoning opening the grain on the outside of the bowl and the inside retains a crusty surface acquired during its working life.
