A rare 18th century Caughley small sauce tureen
A rare Caughley small tureen, c.1785-95, decorated in underglaze blue and overglaze gilding. Very similarly decorated pieces shown in plate 96 of Geoffrey Godden's book "Caughley and Worcester porcelain 1775–1800". He makes the point that these designs were probably gilded at Chamberlains and some might have been wholly decorated at the Worcester establishment, for undecorated examples of other similar items were sent to Chamberlain's.
Geoffrey Godden also makes the point, in his same book, that "all Caughley dinner wares are rare, tureens especially so." Illustrated in the book is a tureen in very similar form to that now being sold, but with a moulded basketwork border. The tureen would originally have contained a spoon or ladle – the aperture let into the side of the cover being for that purpose.
Marked with the Caughley "s".
Condition
In excellent antique condition, save for heavy wear to the gilded decoration, and some kiln dust. No apparent restoration or other damage.
The item is marked to the base.
Dimensions
15cm wide
Payment is accepted by bank transfer, Paypal and UK personal cheque.
