A Rare 17th Century Oak Cricket Table

A rare 17th. Century Oak Cricket Table, the circular top on a carved triangular stretcher, the three bobbin turned uprights united by a further moulded triangular stretcher raised on triangular stiles.
Circa1670 Price :£ 2,450-00p.
Height:25½”, 65 cms.Width:30”, 76 cms. Depth:30”, 76 cms.
Note: Tables having only 3 legs provided stability on uneven floors which were common in less affluent homes and were popular. The simple type as in this case with a circular top and three splayed legs are commonly called “cricket tables”. This is possibly because so many of these were used outside inns often beside the village green where the game was played. There has long been speculation that the 3 legs were used as stumps. The truth may be that the name is derived from an earlier three legged, circular stool known as a cricket.
Lit: “English Country Furniture 1500-1900” David Knell, pp: 50, 71, 241-245, 332, 394, 399n.
