A Late Georgian Early Regency Inkstand of the High
An outstanding table inkstand of silvered pewter, brass and tortoiseshell contre-partie 'Boulle' inlay with applied gilt bronze female masks to the sides.
Manufactured by 'Wells & Co' circa 1809 -1820, makers to the aristocracy and the Royal Family.
The inkstand has two cut glass removable ink wells and 'an almost concealed' lockable drawer made of the finest rosewood, inside the draw a printed label reads 'Wells & Co., Pocket Book, Portable Desk, Dressing Case & Copying Machine Makers To His Royal Highness The Duke of Cumberland, Cockspur St., London (No 29).
Provenance: Most likely purchased by the 10th Earl of Devon, 6th Baronet Courtenay, William Courtenay b.19th June 1777 d. 19th March 1859.
(Succeeded as the 10th Earl of Devon and as the 6th Baronet Courtenay on the 26th May 1835)
This inkstand was from Powderham Castle, Exeter, Devon, England.
It was recorded in the castle's inventory of 1880 as being in the 'Green Satin Room' and also photographed by Mark Girouard for Country Life Magazine July 18th 1963 as being in the Music Room.
