8 campaign officers mess table Royal Flying Corp large 8 campaign %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
Antique large 8' military campaign officer's mess table most probably from the Royal Flying Corps.

A lovely table dating from around 1910-1915.

Amazing veneered top depicting a wooden two blade propeller attached to a 9 cylinder radial or rotary engine. A LOT of work went into this!

Removable laminated mahogany legs with brass feet caps.

We have never seen anything like it, nor can we find any similar examples on the internet...this must be a complete one off!

This is a large quality piece, that is full of age, charm and character.

A beautiful table that is solid, strong and has no loose joints.

No woodworm.

Would look amazing in the right location!

Overall maximum dimensions 121cmW x 244cmL x 74cmH (55.5cmH knee hole).

Historic knocks, marks, cracks, scratches, wear, imperfections, repairs and alterations, as is always the way and to be expected with genuine antique furniture. Some scuffing/wear as you would expect from a campaign table (it has probably been to timbuktu and back several times). The softwood (so as not to be too heavy) planks that make up the top are exhibiting some curl and shrinkage, which has caused some cracking and undulation to the top veneer. The leg locking pins appear to be missing although the table is strong and solid without these.

Stock No. 3866.

We have approached some museums as an attempt to find out more about the table and have received the following replies

'The images you have sent are indeed of a remarkable object. An examination of the Imperial War Museums (IWM) database has shown that there is no similar piece of antique furniture within the collection. I am under the impression the table you have is likely to be a bespoke item – the arrangements to facilitate its transportation are more elaborate than the folding types of portable table typically issued to military officers for field use. It is a pity you do not have any specific provenance as to who owned the table in the past, this may have a proven a starting point with regard to that person’s service history.

I can only recommend contacting the Royal Air Force Museum, in order to ask whether the collection there contains any similar antique furniture. This e-mail address should enable you to contact a person with curatorial responsibility for the relevant part of the collectioncuratorial@rafmuseum.org

and

'Thank you for your enquiry. We have not come across a similar table before. You date it to c1910-1915 – the Royal Flying Corps was not formed until 1912, so it might have connections to early civil aviation or perhaps a propeller manufacturer. I would have thought it unlikely that an RFC unit would have the time to have such a table made, unless it was a training unit based in the UK.

I’m sorry I can’t be more helpful.

Yours sincerely
