6 x English Watercolour Chinese Life c1900 China
A wonderful set of six original watercolour sketches of Chinese life c1900
This is a rare and stunning selection of scenes of life on China around 100 years ago.
Each one is a work of art and an original watercolour with wonderful detail and colour.
The size of the sheets demonstrates that the pages are from a small sketchbook of English origin (there are the remnants of some labels printed with red text on the back of some of the pages).
It would appear that these were possibly preparatory artworks for postcards when taking into account the portrait orientation and small size.
The scenes depicted are as follows:
1 A woman carrying a child on her back. The colours are still bright and there is a lot of detail on the clothing. The facial features are simple yet delightfully captured here. Even the shoes are effectively executed.
2 A man carrying a rake, wicker basket, copper kettle and a large basin under his arm.
This watercolour captures him with a smiling face and a purposeful walking pose. He is wearing some type of head covering and is wearing sandals.
3 A man carrying to large water containers on his shoulders. This gentleman is also wearing some type of head hear and wearing sandals. There is a delightful detail on his clothing with some motif on his back and designs on lower clothing.
4 A man carrying three baskets containing vegetables and walking stick. He is wearing a traditional hat and sandals.
5 A man posing in front of a rickshaw wearing traditional hat. There is some wonderful detailing on his clothing such as the folds/creases on his knees and tunic.
6 A woman with a huge basket of flowers on her back holding one bunch in her hand.
As you can see from the images, each watercolour is a full length portrait with wonderful detail and is of good quality despite being unsigned. There are some very minor blemishes commensurate with age but each one is in overall very good, bright and clean condition.
Each one measures approximately 200mm x 95mm.
