Excellent late 19th.c. watercolour by the well known Irish marine artist Edwin Hayes (1820 – 1904). Striking composition in watercolour on paper showing a fishing fleet drawn onto the beach with figures on the shoreline and sails on the horizon. Lovely sense of a bright breezy day on the coast with fine treatment of sunlight on the water. Clearly signed on the original underling sketch and with paint in the lower left hand corner as E.Hayes RHA (Royal Hibernian Academy) and dated 1870. Excellent condition, presented behind glass in a later frame.

Though he was born in Bristol, Hayes was educated and spent his early life in Dublin where he developed a love of the sea and a fascination with the maritime life. An accomplished sailor, who explored the Irish coast in his own boat and twice crossed the Atlantic with the crew of a merchant vessel, his knowledge and experience is evidenced in the detail found in the boats he painted and his depiction of the effects of weather upon the sea. He moved to London in the 1850’s and for almost 50 years was included in the Royal Academy exhibitions. He was a member of Dublin’s Royal Hibernian Society and the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours. His 1894 work ‘Sunset at Sea from Harlyn Bay Cornwall’ is in the collection of the Tate Gallery London.
