This is a superb 19th Century Ship Portrait of the Brig Pacific approaching the Port of Naples, Italy in full sail in 1847.
It is beautifully painted in Gouache and Watercolour with details picked out in ink, by the well known Italian ship painter Michele Funno. Signed lower left.
It is inscribed along the bottom:

These ship paintings are often called Captains Ship Paintings because they were painted to commission for the Captain of the Ship, and the style of painting is known as Pier head painting.

The Ship: The Brig Pacific is listed in Lloyds Register for 1848-49. She was built in 1813 at Bideford and Registered at Brixham, with a Tonnage of 135. Her Masters are recorded as M Knowles and W Pearce and her owners were the Varwell family, significant ship owners of Brixham.
