19th Century Scottish Watercolour Highland Boy
Sunday morning in the kirk. Probably by H. Cunliffe 19th century.
Cunliffe, Henry (1826 -1894)
The Reverend Henry Cunliffe, M.A., Vicar of Shifnal, in Shropshire, was the fourth son of Sir Robert Henry Cunliffe, 4th Baronet and the eldest by his second wife, Susan Emily, 2nd daughter of Colonel John Paton, Commissary General of the Bengal Army. Educated at Balliol College, Oxford, where he matriculated 24 May 1844, he took his B.A. in 1848, and his M.A. in 1850, and married, 16 November 1853, Mary Augusta, only daughter of Sir James Milles Riddell, 2nd Bart. They had an only daughter, Mary Susan, who died in 1857. His first wife died 2 December 1879, and he married, 2ndly, 20 April 1887, Alexandrina Victoria Murray, 3rd and youngest daughter of the 6th Earl of Dunmore. A selection from his library was sold anonymously at auction by Sotheby, Wilkinson & Hodge on 21 May 1897, the catalogue being described as `A catalogue of valuable books'.
