This is small, charming, early to mid 19th century oil painting on board of the Lake District titled on the reverse "View near Ambleside on the Keswick Road" in its original giltwood frame.

The painting depicts a rural landscape with two farmers, one on horseback, driving cattle and sheep down a country lane with the verdant countryside in the foreground contrasting with the grey, treeless mountains in the distance. Though unsigned, the artist was clearly very gifted with the figures and animals being particularly well captured in what would have been a commonplace occurrence in the first half of 19th century. The picture represents an idyllic view of rural life set against the dramatic scenery of the Lake District.

Condition: The painting is in good condition with the exception of a minor crease/surface crack in the board at centre left bottom. The frame appears to be original to the painting and though there is some rubbing to the original gilding and minor loss to the plaster at top left these have been touched up with gold paint.
