19th Century Oak Mortar And Pestle
It's always difficult to know whether a mortar and pestle have always been together, if not impossible, but they came as a pair to me a long time ago and look well on it. The mortar was cut and turned from a small tree ring or branch, inside the bowl the tree rings tell an interesting story. Soon after it began life, the weather turned very bad, cold summers and winters for about 12 years followed by a similar warm period. Towards the time the wood was cut down a similar bad 12 to 14 year period, one might surmise these were the periods of winter fairs on the Thames.
