19th Century Fruitwood Turned Barrel. Treenware.
This is an extraordinary piece of 19th Century Treenware. It is a large fruitwood barrel, skilfully turned and crafted from a single piece of wood and possibly intended for serving brandy.
Remarkably, it isn't made of 2 adjoining halves, but turned and hollowed out from a single piece of wood, with access only through the threaded aperture to the top. (I have absolutely no idea how this was done!)
It retains its original screw turned nozzle fitting, and threaded acorn shaped cap.
The base is initialed G. S.
The nozzle piece is too tight now to screw fully to the shoulder, and should not be forced.
There are 'shake lines' to the timber, possibly original, but the barrel remains in very good condition.
It would hold about 2 pints plus.
