19th C. Oil Four Franciscan Friars Reading Punch
We are offering for sale this quite joyous painting of four Franciscan Friars reading Punch, by an unknown artist. The painting depicts four Franciscan Friars in their customary brown habits tied with the Cintura Biance, or white rope with three knots to remind them of their vows of poverty, chastity and obedience. Two of them are standing behind the reader, who is seated at a table, possibly in a library, as there are piles of books on the table, as well as more piled up behind it. One of the friars is seated to the right of the reader, in a high backed wooded chair with an embossed leather back and is clutching a cooking pot with a handle. The bespectacled friar is reading from the Punch magazine, something that has obviously occasioned some jollity.
As the painting is unsigned and as it arrived at auction with the frame having been removed, thereby losing any clues that might have been on the back of the frame, we can offer no information as to the artist. However, we have dated the painting by the canvas mark on the back to between 1888 and 1905, but by the number stencilled below the canvas mark, would suggest that it was painted in the 1890s.
The painting has been newly framed in a 3 1/2" (90CM) reeded gilt frame to suit. It will be supplied with new brass hangers, new brass picture wire and will be ready to hang.
Image size: 21 5/8" x 17 1/2" - 44.45cm
Frame size: 29 1/8" x 25 1/8" - 74.1cm x 63.85cm
Medium: Oils on Winsor & Newton canvas
Condition: Very good. There is no craquelure and the surface of the canvas is clean and taut. There are only slight stretcher marks who haven't broken the surface of the paint and one tiny repair behind the stretcher. The frame is new.
