19th C. Dutch Silver Gilt Cuff Links, c.1890-95
Here we have a very distinctive pair of late 19th Century Dutch Silver Gilt Cuff Links. The cuff links feature an image of a young man sitting with his back to a tree, which may well be from an Old Dutch Master painting but if so we have been unable to identify which one. The links have a chain and torpedo backing and come supplied in a modern gift box.
The cuff links have Dutch export marks and London import marks. There is no original Dutch makers' mark but they were imported into London by Lewis Lewis, who specialised in importing continental silver and gold items in the late 19th century. The combination of Dutch and English marks gives us the date range of 1890-1895.
It is possible that these started life as buttons and have later been converted into cuff links but if so this happened a long time ago and they make a very striking set of cuff links.
Condition is very good with just a slight thinning of the gold plating on the raised parts of the design. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
Each cuff link is 2.8cm in diameter and with the chain and torpedo they are 2.9cm long. They weigh in at a very respectable 12.3g.
The marks on the cuff links are a mixture of Dutch and English. The Dutch marks show the dagger crossed by a key for Dutch small silver pieces and the stamp 930 for 930/1000 grade silver. The English marks have the lion passant for at least Sterling Silver (925/1000) grade, the F for foreign and the LL mark for Lewis Lewis.
