1930s Maling Peony Green & Gold Candlestick
This is a superbly decorated ceramic candlestick from the 1930s. It is made by the Maling Pottery in Newcastle-on-Tyne. The pattern is no.5855, Peony - Green & Gold, which dates to c.1932-34.
The Maling Pottery was founded by Christopher Thompson Maling in North Hylton, near Sunderland in 1762 and moved to Newcastle-on-Tyne in 1817. It is this city with which Maling Pottery is always associated. Under successive generations of the Maling family, the pottery was at the forefront of manufacturing innovation and produced in excess of 16,000 different patterns enabling them to always move with the fashion of the times. The pottery finally closed in 1963.
This candlestick, with it's vivid green background and superbly painted flowers is typical of the high quality wares that Maling was producing in the interwar years. It's perfectly usable as a candlestick today, it would make a great piece on a romantic table for two or makes a quite stunning decorative piece in its own right.
Condition is very good with no chips or cracks and no crackling to the glaze. The candle sconce is very clean and undamaged by use. There is a very slight amount of rubbing to the gold highlights. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The candlestick is 9.7cm / 3.8" in diameter across the base and stands 6.3cm / 2.4" high. It weighs 143g. It sits perfectly on a flat surface and is stable with a standard size candle inserted.
The mark on the bottom of the candlestick is the classic three towered castle in a circle surmounted by the word Maling. Beneath the castle is Newcastle-On-Tyne, England, Made In England and the pattern number 5855.
