18th Century Sugar Nippers
A very interesting piece of kitchen history, these sugar nippers would have been used to cut sugar from a sugar cone or sugar loaf.
These are slightly more posh as they sport decoration albeit rather crude. In good condition although the spring is not complete and and the small lock on the handle ends is missing
Some history about sugar nippers...
Originally, sugar came packages in a cone or loaves, the cones could be huge sometimes as tall as 3ft and various tools were required to make the sugar a manageable size. A sugar hatchet was used to break the hard sugar cones into pieces that the sugar nippers could handle. Better made nippers had a spring in the handle to keep them open and easier to use. The small spike on one handle was to keep the hands above the table surface when cutting the sugar. Because some force was required to nip the sugar, the actual cutting was done by resting the spike against the table top and pushing down on the other handle.
