This gentleman’s dressing table was made during the last quarter of the 18th century by Gillows. The Gillows Lancaster stamp is clearly visible on the front top edge of the cabinet and the dressing table will be provided with an extract from the Gillows archive in Westminster showing an almost identical design. The dressing table is in excellent condition with a mellow mahogany finish enhanced by cross-banding and satinwood stringing. Although the washbasin and soap dishes have been replaced, the dressing table still has its original mirror and Wedgwood bidet. This is a well-constructed, functional piece of antique furniture typical of Gillows and a wonderful example of Georgian cabinetmaking at its best. The canted corners, square stringing and oval handles suggest a later period but, as the cabinet is opened, the dressing table gradually reveals its purpose the various compartments offering an interesting insight into the daily ablutions of a gentleman in the days before household plumbing and disposable razors.
