1875 Watercolour wedding commemoration
We are offering for sale is an unusual Victorian hand painted wedding commemoration with two sepia photographs of the bride and groom, contained in its original oval gilt edged mount and oval beaded gilt frame. This would make a lovely gift for anyone who was married on the 15th April! The painting is a spray of flowers in a horseshoe shape entwined with ribbon, upon which is the inscription and the date. In the middle of the horseshoe two ovals have been cut to enclose two sepia photographs. The hand painted rope edged photograph holders are joined together by painted ribbons forming a bow at the top. The inscription reads
LORD, IN ONE, DOES KNIT THEM AS THOU MARRIED 15, APRIL 1875 SO BLESS THEM EVER MORE
The colours of the painting are remarkably bright for the age of the work and the edges of the ribbon with the inscription have been pricked out and then painted over in gold paint. The inscription is also in gold. Altogether a lovely and unusual piece. We have never seen one before and the work is reminiscent of the hand painted cards and postcards of the Victorian era.
The painting is in its original mount and frame, although it would appear that the paper backing has been renewed at some stage. It is ready to hang.
Medium Watercolours with gum arabic and gold
PriceSOLD DimensionsImage size 11" x 9" 28cm x 23cm Frame size 19" x 16 1/2" 48cm x 42cm Category Antique Pictures / Engravings / Art > Antique Watercolours Date 1875 Mid Victorian Antiques Material Paper Origin English Condition Very good. Obviously due to its age, the mount and the painting have age browned slightly at the same rate and there is one slight crease to the mount in the top right hand edge. The frame is in very good condition for its age, with no beads missing, although there is a small bruise to the rear edge of the frame at the bottom, which is invisible when the painting is hung.
