1860's Large Imari Staffordshire Amherst Punchbowl
#AD145: Very Large & Rare 12" English Pottery Chinese Export inspired Imari Bowl
This is a large and rare 12 inch diameter pedestal footed English pottery Chinoiserie Imari fruit bowl, compote, punch bowl or jardiniere. The condition is simply beautiful with no chips, cracks or restoration. It is thick and heavy and very large with a very beautiful thick gold gild rim. It is decorated in an oriental pattern that is similar to a later 19th -20th century Minton pattern called "Amherst Japan." The pattern was named after Lord William Pitt Amherst 1773-1857, who was the 1st Earl Amherst, a British politician and the Governor General of India from 1823-1828. We have taken a photo with an English penny to show relative size.
This blue and white Victorian pattern has elements of Gaudy Welsh design with large flowers, leaves, and oriental pagoda with a path. The gold gilt or gilding is thick and rich on edges and overall. Stunning is the word.
This old antique ironstone piece is marked with the Amherst pattern "1423" in red overglaze on bottom, and no other markings. It has an interesting embossed form, see pics of bottom/sides.
Click images to see condition in close up views and click again to open full images on screen for scrolling to right. It was found in Newton Abbot, Devon, England and is an original piece. It is an absolutely stunning and commanding Victorian piece in the center of a table. The condition of a 19th c. piece in this large size makes it impressive on its own, and we were not able to find another at this large size in extensive searches. It is mazing that it exists in this condition after 150 years.
Size: A large 12 inches in diameter, 6.5 inches tall ——We have a 100% approval policy. For any questions, email Debra at the contact box below. Thank you, ~debra
