1835-1848 Masons Ironstone Fence, Vase, Dove Plate
#AD103:
This is a beautiful and large heavy 10.25" diameter 1830-1840's Victorian era English pottery Chinoiserie dinner plate made by the famous Mason's Patent Ironstone China Pottery Company of Staffordshire, England. The mark on reverse is a printed ribbon crown as exhibited on page 19 of the wonderful 2013 book entitled "A Guide to Mason's Patent Ironstone Patterns", published by The Mason's Collectors' Club. It dates the plate to made between made 1835-1848.
This vivid plate and oriental pattern is pictured and explained on pages 97-98. The pattern is identified as "Fence Vase and Dove pattern." It depicts a central vase filled with flowers depicted sitting on a fenced wooded deck. It has a very complex border which incorporates three round medallions, each with their own oriental dove. The design has a very stylised and intricate floral design.
Various colour combinations were made and this beautiful early plate exhibits deep cobalt blue, heavy gold gilding, bright orange, and a more subdued peachy orange with dark russet brown thin outlines. These thin outlines would have been the initial transferware design after firing, which was then then given to the artist to hand paint in these dark, deep and rich coloured Chinoiserie enamels, as seen. The result is stunning!
Condition is beautiful. There are pre firing marks in rim, very little use and it gives a stunning display. It has the early dark brown Masons mark on reverse. There is also a tiny painted gold gild "x" on edge of rim on reverse, done by artist. Click images to see condition in close up views.
This old Chinoiserie piece was found in Exeter, Devon, England. A beautiful and uncommon early heavy high quality Mason's piece we were thrilled to find. Be sure to see other fine Mason's and Ashworth pieces on our site at Antiques Atlas too.
