17th Century Walnut Bureau Bookcase V336

A small late 17th century walnut Bureau Bookcase. Made in 2 sections, it has pleasing proportions. The bookcase, fitted with 3 adjustable oak shelves, is enclosed by bevelled mirror doors that feature decorative arches.
Below is a classic William and Mary Bureau. The fall front and drawers display the fashion of that period, when the rich flamboyant nature of the walnut wood was used as the main decoration. The mirrored veneers are finished with inlaid lines of feather-banding. Inside the bureau is a replaced leatherette writing surface, a "well" or storage area, accessed by a sliding door, and small drawers, pidgeon holes and a central cupboard.
The interior brassware is probably 1930s replacements, but the external brassware is original. The mirror glass is shaped and bevelled, non-mercury, with slight distressing to be in keeping with this fine period antique. The turned bun feet are also replacements, as walnut feet rarely survive 3 centuries.
This is a superb piece from the short period of walnut antique furniture making (1709 saw walnut blight destroy most walnut trees in Europe, so by 1730 most of the stored walnut was used up, and mahogany took over as the main wood for fine furniture) Circa 1700
Height: 193cm
width: 84cm
Depth: 49.5cm
