William Pezzack Signed Newlyn Copper Tray c1903
We have the pleasure of being able to offer for sale a lovely Edwardian arts and crafts Newlyn copper tray by Newlyn artisan William Pezzack
This lovely small Newlyn tray is decorated repose with a lobster and carries to the reverse the initials WP along with the date 1904.
The tray is 8.5 inches (21.6cm) long and 3.3 inches (8.5cm) wide, The tray is in an excellent condition although it does carry the patina of its age.
About the Artist
William Pezzack (1856-1933), son of the fisherman William, was born in Mousehole on May Day in 1856. He became a postal telegraphist and worked at Newlyn Post office. However, in his spare time he developed considerable skills in painting, woodcarving and metalwork. William became close friends with the artist John Drew Mackenzie in the 1880s and helped Mackenzie, with the financial backing of Thomas Bedford Bolitho, to establish the Newlyn Industrial School of Arts and Crafts with the aim of helping the young people of Newlyn develop skills that would allow them to build careers outside the very precarious fishing industry. William's particular style and subject matter very much influenced the output of the Newlyn School. His signed works are rather rare and seldom come to market.
