Victorian Scottish Silver Farming Medal c1865
A very good and rare, antique Victorian Scottish Silver Agricultural Medal dating from c1865.
The medal was awarded at "John Swan & Sons Christmas Show, Edinburgh 1865". This medal awarded "For the Best Cross Ox" to "Wm. Drysdale, Kilrie".
The medal is hallmarked with the Monarch's Head duty mark (Queen Victoria) the maker's mark "G&MC" for George & Michael Crichton of Edinburgh and the Scottish "thistle" sterling silver mark. There is no date letter, however the maker's mark is recorded as being in use c1865 to 1875, consistent with the date on the medal, 1865.
The recipient of the medal William Drysdale farmed at Kilrie, Kirkcaldy on the east coast of Scotland.
John Swan & Sons, livestock auctioneers, founded in 1856, operating out of a mart in the Berwickshire town of Earlston. During the late 1800s and early 1900s the firm operated marts in East Lothian, Fife, Perth and Edinburgh. The Edinburgh site closed in 2001.
The circular medal measures approximately 2" inches (50mm) in diameter (excluding the suspension loop). The weight is 36.2g
