Victorian Brass Chamberstick, Benham & Froud
Here we have a good quality Victorian Brass Chamberstick complete with its Snuffer. The wide pan has hammered pin decoration in the base surrounding the sconce and a scalloped rim. There is a long handle with a ring for hanging the chamberstick on a hook when not in use. The sconce is urn shaped and the scalloped trumpet shape snuffer sits on a short stand in front of the handle. There is an inner brass ring with the sconce for placing on the end of thinner candles.
The chamberstick was made in London by renowned metalworkers Benham & Froud and dates to around the 1880s. The firm traced its origins back to John Kepp who established himself as a coppersmith and brazier in Chandos Street, London in 1785 and was followed by his sons Richard & Edward Kepp around 1818. In 1821 the Kepps made the replacement orb and cross for St Paul’s Cathedral, which still stands atop the dome today, and a stylised version of this would became the company trademark. In 1855 Herbert Benham & Joseph Froud became the owners and the firm was renamed Benham & Froud. They are best known in later years for their association with the great designer Dr Christopher Dresser who produced a variety of designs for them between 1872 and 1893. The firm ceased trading in the mid-1920s.
Although the chamberstick has clearly seen some use, overall condition is good with just a few of the pinhead decorations having been polished through. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The chamberstick is 29cm / 11.4ins from rim to handle, 17.3cm / 6.8ins in diameter across the pan and stands 8.5cm / 3.3ins high. It weighs in at 300g / 10.6oz.
The underside of the pan is stamped with the Benham & Froud trademark of a stylised version of the cross and orb atop St Paul's Cathedral.
Shipping in the UK is £6.50 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For Parcel Post.
