Superb 1960's Guy Rogers New Yorker Teak Sofa
A Stunning 1960's Guy Rogers 'New Yorker' Three Seater Sofa.
Unquestionably one of the very best sofa designs from the hallowed 'Mid-Century Modern' era, the 'New Yorker', manufactured by Guy Rogers of Liverpool, represents Britain at its furniture-making best, going toe to toe with the high-end Scandinavian designs of the 1960's.
Conceived by George Fejer and Eric Phamphilon, this incredibly stylish offering is matched by its attention to detail and outright quality of construction. Crafted from solid Afrormosia (teak) throughout, the design is a picture of understated elegance where functionality meets wonderfully pared-down lines and subtle detailing. There is absolutely nothing superfluous, this lovely sofa encourages comfortable, supportive yet relaxed seating and is simply a great place to spend some time with a drink, a good book or to watch TV.
100% fresh to market and sourced from an excellent home, this example has been particularly well-cared for and is about as good as you will find. The wooden frame benefits from particularly beautiful grain, which I have tried to highlight in the photos.
The foam and upholstery is well-used and tired, so the piece is being sold for reupholstery. The underlying quality and condition of the teak frame more than justifies this work. You are effectively buying the wooden frame and can then have it refinished to suit your own budget, taste and interior. This is a better option than paying for a fully reupholstered example, at much greater cost, and where the colours chosen by someone else are not 100% what you want. Here you can tailor the look exactly to your wishes.
The webbing however is brand new and has just been replaced by myself - done properly with quality OEM Pirelli rubber webbing and to the correct specification.
All in all, this is a wonderful opportunity for someone out there.....a blank canvas if you like, where the most important aspect of a completely sound and beautiful base is about as good as it gets, and to which you, or your upholsterer, can add foam and cloth to make the perfect, bespoke mid century sofa.
Approx Dimensions -
Measurements are approx 82 cms deep x 73 cms high x 175 cms wide.
Condition -
As noted above, we recommend new foam and upholstery throughout.
The frame is in superb condition for age, with excellent grain and colour throughout. No breaks, losses or repairs. No loose joints. The frames is solid, tight and displays exceptionally well. Some small minor surface marks from fair use (a few knocks and scratches) but nothing which greatly detracts.
The webbing to the sofa is brand new and has been replaced to a high standard.
