Scottish Silver DUX Medal, Kelvinside Academy Glasgow
A GOOD SCOTTISH SILVER DUX MEDAL, KELVINSIDE ACADEMY GLASGOW, MORTON MURDOCH c1932.
A very good and rare, Scottish Dux Medal. A Dux medal is awarded in Scotland to the pupil with the highest level of academic achievement in a class, subject or school.
This medal was awarded by Kelvinside Academy to William Ridley Morton Murdoch, Dux of IV Upper 1932-33.
The sterling silver medal is hallmarked with the makers mark "JR&WL" for JR & W Laing (Gordon Street, Glasgow), the Lion Passant sterling silver mark, the Birmingham anchor town mark and date letter "H" for 1932/33.
It measures 50mm in diameter and 5mm thick. The weight is 72.7g.
The medal complete with the original, fitted, presentation case with the maker's name printed on the inside.
The recipient:
William Ridley Morton Murdoch MA, LLB, CBE, DSC and Bar, VRD, OstJ, RNR 1939-45, Capt RNVR 1959 (17 May 1917 - 31 July 2000)
Born in Glasgow, educated at Kelvinside Academy and Glasgow University, he followed the law, the fourth generation of his family to do so. Morton had a distinguished naval record, during the Second World War he served on the destroyer Paladin, mostly in the Indian Ocean and the Mediterranean.
He worked in the family law firm in Glasgow and served as a director of the Glasgow Chamber of Commerce (1955-71) and as Dean of the Faculty of Procurators (1968-71). In 1971 he was invited to be Sheriff of Ross and Cromarty, a post he held until 1978.
He was chairman of The Gairloch Heritage Society and was a member of the Executive of the National Trust for Scotland. Specialists in Antique Pocket Watches & Vintage Wristwatches, Jewellery, Silver (including Scottish Provincial),Good Quality Antiques & Works of Art.
