Rare Floor Standing Japanese Carved Stone Sculpture Chinese stone carved %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
A rare mid 20th century Japanese stone sculpture depicting a tiger on one side and a dragon on the other presented on a rosewood stand having a combined weight of 21.5 kg. The yellow coloured stone is sandwiched between thin layers of red stone which the craftsman has carefully partially removed as in a cameo to generate the designs on both sides. The detail is quite extraordinary with the horns and four clawed legs of the dragon and the open roaring mouth of the tiger clearly displayed. Because the interfaces between the layers in the stone are not smooth the edges of the images are 'softened' creating an almost impressionist effect. Our research has not, to date, found anything similar to this sculpture in the UK but some examples , although generally smaller and less impressive, have cropped up in Japan.

The stand is made from rosewood with the opening shaped to the base of the stone.

This sculpture can be displayed on the floor or on a strong table.

The first photo shows it in comparison with a standard 750ml bottle of wine.

Weight 21.5 kg

Condition: Excellent condition. There is some natural veining in the rock but there are no cracks or chips.
