Nursery oil lamp of an owl. Original condition.
A very attractive oil lamp probably made in France in the later Victorian era. The owl is made of pottery with glass eyes, and the shade and funnel are made from glass. The burner and support for the shade is brass.
Lamps like this were made for children for lighting in the nursery, or for the bedroom. They came in many designs of animals or birds, from owls to elephants to cats and dogs. Indeed in my listings there is a oil lamp of a cod which would be for the child of a trawler owner or someone closely related to the fishing industry, as well as an original owl lamp.
The reservoir for the lamp oil is inside the body of the owl and the top unscrews at the owls head to top up the oil.
This lamp is in first class condition, with no chips cracks or repairs. It is also in original condition and still has the wick in place. It can still be used for its original purpose, however I would suggest that it is just used as an ornament and a talking point.
It stands 14.5 inches to the top of the funnel. The body of the owl is 6 inches tall.
