Large 19th C Antique Planter. Brass Jardiniere
This is a fine and large early 19th Century Brass Jardiniere.
Deep jardinieres of this type would have been used for displaying large exotic house plants, displays of flowers, and fruits, and also used as wine coolers.
It has a collared base, deeply rolled top rim and very impressive large caste Lions Mask ringed handles.
It is made of heavy, quality brass, hammered and impressed with detail (Repoussé work).
To one side it is decorated with a helmet and visor and shoulder plates of armour surrounded by scrolled acanthus leaves, and the other side with fruit including pomegranates.
Solid and sound. It has been reinforced with an extra seam of welding in the past around the inside edge of the base plate to ensure it is strong and waterproof.
