Early 20thC grape picker’s hod Chateauneuf du Pape
A genuine 20thC painted grape picker's hod from the great Chateuneuf Du-Pape wine region in southern France, close to Avignon.
The leather straps, though very dry and broken, are still on the back showing how it was worn like a rucksack and the pickers then threw their grape bunches in over their shoulders.
These tin collecting hods were replaced by the growth of mechanisation, which really rose to prominence in the labour shortages of the war years. I would suggest this hod is circa that period, so a mid-century item.
As you can see it is extensively decorated in a combination of spray and hand painting. It is made of tin and bears the patina of use and age.
An incredibly decorative and fun item, with a myriad of uses, these are becoming increasingly hard to find.
