Early 18thc Lignum Vitae Pestle & Mortar
A fine example of an early 18thc lignum vitae pestle & mortar.
This piece is in excellent original condition and has a very good patina (colour).
The lignum vitae wood began to be imported in the late 16thc - early 17thc & was was commonly used over the years to make pestle & mortars due to its hardness & dense grain.
The pestle & mortar was used to grind or pulverise items such as herbs & spices, tobacco & snuff as well as coffee & medicines.
