Art Nou. Liberty's Pewter Tudric Tea Set
Each with a delightfully hammered ground, numbered 01075 ‘Made in England, Tudric’ and in fine condition with the teapot having an ebony handle and knop finial. This range of pewter was beautifully made for Liberty's by the Birmingham firm of W.H.Haseler.
Archibald Knox was born in the village of Cronkbourne, near Tromode on the Isle of Man in the April of 1864. After studying in Ayr, Archibald Knox moved to the English mainland and took a teaching post at Redhill School of Art in Surrey. He then went on to be involved with the studios of the distinguished designer Christopher Dresser and he began designing for Liberty & Co. of London, creating items of antique jewellery and working on their Cymric series.
After 1902, the Tudric series of pewter ware was introduced for which Knox designed innumerable items on a piecework basis. The Knox name does not appear on any of the objects that he designed for Liberty, nor in their catalogues of the time. Liberty's continued to make pewter until 1938.
A highly collectable tea set, and one that fully embraces the art nouveau style with typical swagger.
