19th Century Iron Cheese Press

1 of 4
A superb piece of agricultural history. This rare double cheese press would have been for small scale cheese-making during the late 19th century. Cheese pressing was the final stage in the cheese-making process to remove excess whey and to shape the cheese to the mould. Two pressings were usually made and then the cheese would be wrapped in muslin and bandaged in linen. It would be date stamped and stored in the cool cheese room or loft on the farm.
The cheese press was made by Garner & Son of Melton Mowbray Leicestershire and would have had the more complex parts including the handles made separately by T Corbett of Shrewsbury. The base is proudly cast with Winner of 14 first prizes. It was even a first prize cheese press winner from the London, Birmingham and Amsterdam Exhibition for new products! circa 1880
NB one part of the handle is missing however this does not stop you using the piece. It is in great condition having had a full restoration. Aluminium cylinders are a later addition.
Width 120cm / 47.25''
Height 180cm / 70.75''
Depth 61cm / 24''
