A wonderful & exceptionally rare mid 15th century medieval oak corbel of a man, possibly an apostle, wearing horn or bone rimmed spectacles reading from the book of hours with a fabulous animated expression, dressed in a robe and wearing what looks like an mitre for a hat. The carving has a naive look about it which works incredibly well, the detail of the parchement folds of the pages is exceptional.
In the 15th Century these early convex spectacles were being produced in Venice for most of mainland Europe and England, there was even a fad for people to wear them that didnt need glasses because it made them look intellectual!!!
