A Late17th Century Hunting Scene. Carved figure hunting boar %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
A late 17th century carved oak hunting scene, depicting a man preparing to shoot a wild boar with his flintlock rifle as his dog attacks it.
It is possible that this carving was once longer and part of some kind of tavern cistern. There is a hole drilled in the centre of the carving with a rebated circle, which would suggest this once had a tap on the front. Its a very unusual fragment and has a superb patina, with traces of original polychrome. Overall the carving is in excellent condition and there is an old repair to the leg of the boar.
