15th Century Medieval Oak Corbel corbel medieval carving %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
A Rare piece of Medieval social history, depicting an oak corbel of a wheelwright holding a curved draw knife or "draw shave"
this big barrel chested man is dressed in a head scarf, with a thick heavy studded coat and a great big beard!!
The draw knife (also known as a draw shave), had many specialised applications. In addition to the traditional use of debarking logs, the draw knife was used for shaping operations and for the rapid removal of surplus wood. Once again a rare example of medieval social history.
