WW1 9ct Gold Cross-Peace 1919-JF, B'ham, 1918
Here we have a poignant and beautiful 9ct Yellow Gold Cross on a 9ct Gold Chain from the end of the First World War. The cross is in the celtic style with the front engraved with ivy leaves (an ancient symbol of peace) and on the back the words Peace 1919. The chain has an attractive double link design and is 20 inches long. The cross and chain come supplied in a modern gift box.
The cross was made in Birmingham in 1918 and has a makers' mark of J..F, which we haven't been able to identify. The Birmingham date letters run from July to July, so the 1918 date letter ran from July 1918 to July 1919.
Although the end of World War One was generally associated with Armistice Day on 11th November 1918, the state of war did not formally cease until the signing of the Treaty of Versailles on 28 June 1919 and memorials often quote the dates as 1914-1919.
Condition is good but there is a small dent at the bottom of the back of the cross, however this is not apparent when viewed from the front. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The cross is 2.6cm high and 1.7cm across. The chain is 50cm / 20ins long. Cross and chain together weigh in at 1.6g.
The hallmarks on the back of the cross are necessarily small but still clear to read. They show the 9 and .375 for 9ct gold, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter t for 1918 and the J..F makers' mark.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the cross and chain.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
