William V. Tippet 1833-1910 Oil Landscape Sheep
We are offering for sale this very well executed oil painting on canvas by the artist William Vivian Tippet, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner and dated it 1891. The painting depicts a herd of sheep on a track outside a field with a wooden fence and gate. There is a thatched haystack inside the field and a church spire in the far distance. To the left is a small wood with the trees bearing autumnal leaves.
William Vivian Tippet, 1833-1910, was born in Bristol in 1833, the son of an accountant. He was practicing as an artist by 1861 and living with his parents at 5 Ashley Road Bristol. By 1881, he was living with his second wife Emma and 6 children at 64 Oldbury Court Road, Stapleton, Gloucestershire. By 1891 he was again living in Bristol at 19 Downend Road. He died in Bristol in 1910 aged 77.
To quote from Jeremy Wood's excellent book 'Hidden Talents'
'Landscape painter in oil and sometimes watercolour, who lived in Bristol. He was a prolific exhibitor at the Royal West of England Academy, showing 132 works at the Annual Exhibitions 1856-1892, and a further 63 works at the Winter Exhibitions. Most of the subjects were rural landscapes featuring cattle, sheep and horses and also some views of South Wales. He exhibited several river landscapes and the titles included 'On the Avon' (1870) and 'On the Frome at Yate (1886). The Bristol City Art Gallery owned a view of 'Winterbourne Church' (1898) and his work was featured in the 'Ten Bristol Artists' Exhbition at the Gallery in 1934.'
Auction listings for works by this artist may be found at the usual sites, but please note that a lot of these list him as Tippett, which is incorrect, both according to the signature on this painting and census records. A 30" x 20" oil painting achieved £588 at Christie's in 2002.
The painting is framed in a very nice 2 3/4" swept gilt frame and will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
Image size 29 1/4" x 19 3/8" - 74.3cm x 49.25cm
Frame size 35 1/8" x 25 1/8" - 89.2cm x 63.8cm
Medium Oils on canvas
Condition Very good condition. The canvas is clean and taut and there are no repairs or paint loss. There is some very fine craquelure predominately in the white clouds and slight stretcher marks consistent with age. The frame is in very good condition.
