William Lakin Turner Victorian Oil
We are delighted to offer this superbly executed oil on canvas by the renowned artist WILLIAM LAKIN TURNER, who has signed the painting W.L. Turner in the lower left hand corner. The painting depicts a haymaking scene in the Lake District, in late summer, with one of the lakes in the background. There is a man cutting the corn and two women collecting it and making the corn stooks. Half of the field has already been cut and there are rows of finished stooks to the right hand side. The hills of the Lake District have been painted with Turner's customary skill. In the left hand corner above the signature is a wicker basket, containing the lunch for the workers in the field.
WILLIAM LAKIN TURNER was born on February 27th, 1867 in Derbyshire, the son and one of four children of the well known Derbyshire artist GEORGE TURNER, whose pupil he became, along with Louis Bosworth Hurt, another well known artist. He also studied at the West London School of Art in Chelsea, where he met his future wife Lina. He painted landscapes in oil of Scotland, the Lake district and its environs and specialised in mountain and wooded scenes.
WILLIAM LAKIN TURNER is listed in The Dictionary of British Artists, The Dictionary of Victorian Painters by Christopher Wood, The Dictionary of British Artists by Grant M. Waters and his works exhibited in London Exhibitions up to 1893 are listed in Graves Dictionary. His auction results frequently appear in Hislop's Guide to the UK Art Market and are also shown on artprice.com (120 listings), artnet.com (42), findartinfo.com (67) etc. There are several British galleries listing works by this artist on google at prices into the thousands of pounds.
